2010 Uni Games - University Rugby 7s Team

University Sport New Zealand presents the 2010 Uni Games to be held in Invercargill. The games are a huge annual event for sport minded students throughout the country. After a long absence rugby returns to the Uni games in the form of 7s. A Auckland University Rugby team will be traveling down to win national honors. The Uni games includes 20 + Sports which involves around 1000 - 1200 competitors who are all students, which should equate to a good party atmosphere.

AURFC 7s 2010 - Progressing nicely
What has served as a good opportunity to bring in new players to the club and have them playing and socialising along side established senior players has been a very worthwhile exercise leading into the 2010 season.
In what is the second year we have run a Sevens team, there has been tremendous progress from its inaugural year in culture, results and it's overall purpose to recruit and develop AURFC talent for the XVs season.
Notably new recruit from St Peters College Nepia Fox-Matamua has been outstanding, another name to add to the 'watch out for' list in 2010.

A sincere thank you to Kumo for his time and passion in coaching the team and the committee for financially supporting the programme.

31st January 2010 Mt Manganui
No one had told us we would be participating in our first underwater Sevens tournament. Weather you would expect in Wellington, hit the Mount on there big day of national club sevens.
Under these outrageous conditions the style of play adopted more suited your standard northern hemisphere XVs game, kick for territory and apply pressure.
The lads played four games, winning two and losing two. The most vital was the last game which was the Quarter Final lost for the Plate against Hamilton Old Boys.

The future Premier back-row made a huge contribution to the teams effort once again; Sam Henwood made some decisive breaks throughout the tournament with pace to burn, Nepia was playing like Benji Marshall and Matich cleared a total of 213 rucks. Liam Steel from St Kents made his debut in Varsity blue and made a big splash with every touch down.

Results
Mt Manganui 5 - 17 loss
Rotoiti  24 - 0 Win
Melville 12 - 7 Win
Hamilton Old Boys
5 - 17 loss QF Plate

Player of the Tournament: Robert Taylor
A new player making his debut for the 7s team left a huge impression on the rest of the lads and left the core of the squad scratching their heads as to why he hadn’t made more appearances in the previous tournaments. RT has joined up with the New Zealand squad for their preparations for the Wellington 7s.

Te Rapa Sevens 2009
A much better performance from the Varsity team at the Te Rapa tournament played on the 28th of November down in Hamilton left the squad in a very positive mindset for future tournaments. The lads lost the final of the Bowl 5 - 17.

Ben Boyle (Shooters) was top try scorer with five outstanding finishes.

Nepia and Matthew were joint players of the tournament for the Varsity team and were making their debuts in the royal blue. Other players making their debut were Fraser Deas and Dane Coles. Welcome to the club boys.

Formal presentations of the days achievements and fines were done at the very well know Waikato student establishment The Outback Inn.

Tournament. Te Awamutu Sports Club Sevens

On a short road trip just past Hamilton, The University team took a very young squad of highly talented and passionate players.

Squad:
John Vea
Rob Connoley
Chase Schiphorst
Jack Hunt
Grady Hunt
Lio Tafoulua
Joey Stauton
David 'Cornflake' Cornthwaite
Kaho Paseka
Brain Lima
James Mata
Siua Koloti

University won both of their pools games. The first being against Leamington which University won 20-5. Try scorers were:

John Vea
Siua Koloto
Jack Hunt
Brian Lima

In the second pool game, University were up against Reparoa who were a quality side that was being mentored by Gordon Tietjens. University were down 7 - 10 in injury time, when a bit of magic
from Kaho Paseka got the try for the win. With two wins, University qualified for the championship quarter final. Try scorers were:

Lio Tafoulua
Brian Lima (Con)
Kaho Paseka

In the quarter final, University were playing Hautapu. At half time Uni were up 17 - 5, only for Hautapu to come back and tie the game with no time left. It was straight into a automatic golden point extra time playoff. Gut wrenching Hautapu were the first to score. Try scorers were:

John Vea
Jack Hunt
Lio Tafoulua (Con)
David Cornthwaite

Overall, University were one of the youngest sides at the competition and played with a high level of confidence and great deal of flair. The team has progressed enormously from the first tournament, simple by the players dedication and the commitment from coach Murray Helleur and trainer Guy Mothersole. There is some great talent coming through for University, watch this space and remember these names.

Tournament 1. Fijian Invitational Sevens

The first time in over ten years University had a Sevens team playing, little was expected from a very inexperienced side, which was evidently displayed in the first game against last year's winners Lomaiviti. They did have some players who had played a little Sevens before, guys by the name of Waisale Serevi and New Zealand Sevens player Lote Raikabula. University were a mere breakfast material for them, given it was 9.00am kick off. As we progressed through to the semi final stages of the Bowl, the players started to work together as a team and play like a Sevens team. Jarek Goebel, John Vea, Siua Koloto and Mapa Tuipulotu started to make clean breaks after periods of quality ball retention. Also, the fact they were playing against quality opposition enabled the University team at first hand to see the skills and tactics needed to win.

In the Semi Final, University went two scores up before halftime, one with Mapa breaking from 60 metres out and the other being a cross field kick by Paea to Mapa for the score. Naitasiri scored early in the second half, University fought back with a try by Toto to clinch a Final spot, though the difference could have been Suia's impressive try saving tackle just before the halftime. In the final of the bowl, University played Patumahoe and lost 27 - 24 in the Final of the Bowl, Mapa, Jarek, Renata and Roids all scoring. Both the Semi Final and Final were entertaining games as University started to play good Sevens rugby, which bodes well for their next tournament at Te Awamutu on the 15th of November.
